A valid question. I just broke the 1 million mark for this project, and I expected to feel better about it. I am now considering reallocating resources away from cosmology until there's more of a presence here from the project organizers. I understand they have issues of their own to deal with, but I can't justify continuing here unless I know the work isn't being completely wasted.

Your concerns are very valid and understandable. The work you have been doing is extremely valuable, and I have forwarded your post to Professor Benjamin Wandelt, the project director, for feedback. He will be able to give us a more detailed report about how the work you have been doing fits into the bigger picture of cosmology research.

I think most of these questions appear because of the fact, that we simply don't really know what we're doing here.
"Finding the model which describes..." is a nice Opener, but it doesn't explain whats happening on our CPUs, and so there is pretty much room for personal imaginations, which result in questions related to these imaginations.

F.e. we don't know which part plays C@H in the process of UniverseModelFinding.
Is C@H itself something like the Bolshoi simulation or is it just a supporting tool? Will there ever be a chance that C@H ends with some results of its own, or is it impossible because C@H is "just" an important supporting tool for other simulations?
What does "PICO" mean and what role plays it for C@H?

I know that some informations are findable in the welcome letter, and most of us (me too) simply forget at first to read it :-)
But even with this informations we don't know which part plays C@H for the Wandelt Group today, or for cosmology research in general.
And when you search the web and (try to) read related publications you'll soon notice, that C@H does not seem to exist outside C@H itself. You don't find hints to C@H even in Bens newest publications (afaik of course).
That makes uncertain.

Compare it with a worker who never sees the products of his work and who don't understands what happens in his tools. It's a disturbing experience and because our contribution depends absolutely on our selfmotivation, we begin questioning our contribution itself.

In my POV i think it is important to make once more clear, that this questions for information/project updates are never meant to sound unpolite in any way.
I am aware of the fact that Ben is a very busy man. You can google it. You'll find his outputs.
But it is also a very true fact, that the amount of his feedback here could result in wrong interpretions about the importance of C@H for his work, and the importance of our contributions at all.
That's pure poison for enthusiasm.

Faik, I'm absolutely sure that you give your best to communicate our concerns to him. I hope this will finally result in a reaction which inspires me (and others) once more, to give my best for feeding the C@H crunching machine.

Many thanks for interest and your patience!

I just wanted to take a few minutes to thank you for your effort on behalf of cosmology@home. We have made great strides in the last years and I am very pleased to see that our servers held up in the recent Dutch Power Cow stampede!

An update from us on the progress we are making with cosmology@home is overdue. The first Planck analysis has been released and I am glad to report that Pico (the code that we are feeding and training with the results from cosmology@home) was used extensively during the cosmological parameter analysis. We have readied a major update for the website (including new hardware).

I just heard that the hardware has arrived and if there are no unforeseen problems it should come online later this week. Then we will deploy the website upgrades.

I will post more next week about the changes, also in other threads, but you've heard it here first.

Oh, and Go Dutch Power Cows!

And of course, thank you to all our other faithful supporters throughout the years!

I've decided to donate my CPU cycles to other projects that do a better job of communicating. I'll check back here from time to time and become active again after we get an informative report. I can understand the sentiment but some projects can produce more easily intermediate results while others need more time to run to produce results. I think this is one of those projects.

I've only joined recently but I would too like to hear more about what my cpu is doing for c@h. btw: the "Cosmology and Astronomy" board is, for me, worth it to donate my cpu cycles :)

CosmologyAtHome has been operating for nearly six years. Time enough for some preliminary results, I would think. I have searched diligently both on this site and on the web without finding anything resembling a progress report. The short posting below by Professor Wandelt only mentions the phrases "Planck analysis" and "cosmological parameter analysis," without any meaningful details. Very non-informative.

I run 14 projects and I think that's too many. But all of the ones I run, I love. This includes this one. However, I am looking for any reason I can find to kick a couple of these projects off at any time because I feel I'm spreading around my resources a little thin.

You definitely have somethings going for you. I love the concept, the school you research for, the head researcher, other people involved. Those nasa and other logos at the bottom help give credibility to this project.

What's missing? Main site changes of any sort. Last "news" was sometime in 2012. And yes, news about the science easily accessible. If there was just 1 or 2 projects, and not the competitive nature of vying our resources and not having us get bored, we need meaningful scientific updates on what we're doing. Compared to other projects - your updates are not very revealing.

A project that I think has really "got it" is theskynetpogs. I think this project is more meaningful, HOWEVER, I think their PR to their users is by far better. Their site is much more flashy, updated more often, and they have TOO MANY trophies. Now I am not trying to turn people away from this project. Like I said - I think it's actually a better mission. But here is an example of one of their updates. Compare it to Bens/yours:

BTW, that last paragraph is a little confusing. When I'm saying this project is better, I mean Cosmology@home, not theskynet. I'm trying to say they have the PR figured out, even though I think the project concept isn't as interesting.

Due to computers getting faster, everything remaining constant.....this line should have an upward trajectory.

Another project I do, with a healthier line. Granted, it uses GPUs....but regular CPUs also have been getting faster.

I only get CPU downloads for Cosmo- though I have been using GTX460 for other folding for ages. I do get MW@Home and Seti work OK for GPU.
Likewise Rosetta only sends CPU work and all CPU work gets i/20 of the credits of GPU work. Not sure how valuable the CPU stuff is- compared to GPU.
I think CPU work is double precision, and not true for GPUs?

I can no longer do this guys. This is a really hard decision for me, and it wouldn't have taken much for you to have gotten me to stay. I looked up Ben...see what he's doing and in Paris....see that he's doing some important stuff, but I don't know what I'm doing, nor what it's doing.

This program has a huge communication issue with it's users. Not that a lot of boinc projects don't - just. . .I can't do this anymore like I said. I prefer to be able to see or feel my impact. It's not rewarding for me when I just crunch and....I don't know. It's like I'm crunching units for a science slush fund or something. I know it has something to do with the universe and it's realities, just......nothing more.
