Some projects seem related to medicines but when you look at the eventual results, they aren't benefitting everybody, they only benefit shareholders and stake-holders for where that medicine will get produced. In summary they can be supported and financed by big-medicine since it only benefits them and their shareholders. No point in me volunteering my time or resources for someone else's benefit and profit. Projects like SETI, Einstien, Cosmology, Milkyway are the types of projects that are not resulting in money(profit) but are always struggling along on a shoestring budget, yet it benefits everybody. This makes sense for me to volunteer my time or resources because "Everybody" benefits in the results. BOINC is a worthwhile project making use of "spare" CPU cycles, and projects like BOINC require little effort on the part of us volunteers to donate what would otherwise be wasted CPU heat running idle computers waiting for the next mouse click or keyboard tap. |

I initially ran Cosmology@home as a side project, just to fill up the gaps when SETI@home didn't have work. But now I have to say, I couln't do without! Cosmology@home is the only project I never have problems with! Credits get granted immediately, the server never crashes (except for the validator that one time, but that was cleared up really fast...), there are always workunits available,... I also feel a friendly aura,(I really don't know how to call it, otherwise) surrounding the project. And last but not least: The whole idea around the project is a real help for the science of Cosmology and science in general. Grts Julie |

I posted to this thread about a week ago, but it isn't here. I wonder if Ben even cares? I think he cares about the science. If you need constant, or any really, handholding, this project is not for you. Having said that, if you read this Ben, Brian Silvers does a sterling job answering queries on this board, so perhaps you could make him a moderator? Regards David |

I posted to this thread about a week ago, but it isn't here. I wonder if Ben even cares? Julie, it sounds like you know Ben personally. I have a friend who took a course from Carl Sagan, as an undergrad. I really envy him. :) I think he cares about the science. If you need constant, or any really, handholding, this project is not for you. I don't need any handholding. I agree with Julie about the servers being up all the time, and they're fast, as opposed to MW. I crunch solely for C@H and E@H now because I'm deaply interested in astrophysics and cosmology. In fact, I think that from a long range perspective, those are the two most important sciences deserving study. Cheers, Steve |

Appreciate the kind words, but I think someone else would be a far better choice, not to mention that there is still a mod around, though I think he's mostly silent these days... -Brian ![]() |

I'm an accountant with an SF bent-I like science, just not smart enough for it. Where else can the average guy contribute to something like this? Here we can do something besides send money. steve king |

I just wanted to say that I took leave from C@H for a long while but I have now come back to crunch some more. Howdy to those that I knew then and howdy to all the new people that have come while I was gone. Cheers! ![]() |

I am 29 years old, currently a SSgt in the US Air Force. Even though the job I do in the AF requires the best and brightest minds in the military, many people just see the uniform. Truthfully, I am a physicist and a student of the sciences in general. For reasons that are my own, I failed to accomplish my first go at a physics degree. Now I am working hard to redeem my academic career and to ultimately earn my PhD in physics. Participating in cosmology@home, as well as other astrophysical projects on boinc, is my way of contributing to our understanding of the universe in the interim. |

How do you fet rid of the junk that CAMB has downloaded to my hard drive? Seriously, guyd, you need to get help from some professionals in computing, so that you do not leave junk behind on people's PCs. What directory do I delete? |
