Hello,

I have installed boinc and am happy to use my laptop for this project for the forseable.

I live in Aus so pay for bandwidth (only have 50gb/month downlaods but uploads are included in the price)

Please could someone explain how much bandwidth this requires? I have 8 tasks from CAMB going on but my network meter does not show much increase in usage.

Is this more proccessor/computing heavy than bandwidth?

Appologies for the noob questions but BOINC and cosmology at home don't have a FAQ for retards who work in sales but like Carl Sagan and would like to contribute.

Thanks for the help.

Don't berate yourself just because you don't know, we were ALL there once! YES Boinc is more processor intensive then bandwidth intense. The idea is to download a group of workunits that your pc then processes and when they are done, or nearly done, send them back and get some more workunits to work on. Some projects have longer workunits than other projects so your bandwidth will vary, but can be somewhat controlled by the size of your cache. The larger the cache the less often Boinc must get more work, but the bigger the up and downloads when it does.

This project is as good as any for those whose bandwidth is expensive. Small downloads, longer crunching times per work unit, and three week due times all help to keep the expenses to a minimum. Expect your i7 to take about a day per WU per core.

Thanks Mikey and SM,

That's good news, I don't think bandwidth will be a problem. I have spoken to the IT guy at work and he has installed some software so I can see how much each programme is using so I can keep an eye on it.

I enjoy learning about the current space missions and also the voyager probes now leaving the Solar System.

I will read up more on this project and on the forums and I hope you all get some interesting results!

Thanks again,

T
